Abstract

Vegetation Filters (VFs) are forestry plantations that take advantage of the soil-plant microorganism system mutual action to treat wastewater. The objective of this study is to avoid nutrient leaching by maximizing the treatment efficiency in a pilot VF through: i) the incorporation of soil amendments and ii) the irrigation management. Nitrogen removal by denitrification is greater with woodchip amendment (it boosts microbial activity by increasing the C/N ratio) and with lower loads and more frequent irrigations (it favors anaerobic conditions by maintaining soil moisture). Woodchips and irrigation management do not improve phosphorus removal. Groundwater is not affected by nutrient leaching from the VF
